A Mom’s Real-Life Battle to Reclaim Family Time

I was losing my kids to their iPads, and it felt like a slow-motion gut punch. Life gets busy—laundry piles up, messy rooms get messier, and breakfast, lunch, and dinner are unstoppable—and before I knew it, my wild little humans were glued to screens, eyes blank, swiping away. Where was the sticky, loud mess I signed up for? I’d catch them zoned out, and guilt would creep in, whispering, “You’re not a good mom.” They weren’t climbing all over me anymore—they were lost in the iPad. I’d had enough.

So I changed the game. During school hours, I get my stuff done—work, books, whatever keeps me sane. But when they burst through the door, I’m all in. No more “just a minute” while I scroll mindlessly. These years are flying by, and I refuse to let tech steal them. I want my kids to remember me as the mom who made life a blast, not the one who handed them a tablet and faded into the kitchen and laundry.

They’re My Everything—Not Just a Checkbox

My kids aren’t some traditional “must-have”—they’re my jackpot, my reason. I’m not here to waste or argue; I’m here to soak up their messy, magical energy. Think park adventures where we trip, holding hands and chatting; kitchen messes with cookie dough everywhere; and storytime where I make every character voice. That’s what fills me up. I want them feeling life, not just watching it through a screen.

Sure, screens can “educate”—I get it. But when my son started repeating YouTube ads instead of playing in the garden, I drew the line. We set up “no iPad zones”—kitchen, bedrooms, my sanity—and carved out family time that’s non-negotiable. We wander to the park, hands linked, giggling at goofy trees or how funny I pronounce an English word. Crossing the street turns into a mini lesson—“Look left, you little piggies”—and” when they are angry or upset, I’m right there with a “You okay, babe?” That’s the real stuff—no app can touch it.

I’m Not Perfect, and That’s Okay

I’ll be honest—some days, I still toss them the tablet just to catch my breath. Laundry’s not folding itself, right? But every moment I steal back from those screens feels like a victory. I want their childhood to be a memory book of us—laughing, playing, connecting—not a playlist of forgotten shows.

Moms, Let’s Bring Back the Mess

If you’re stuck in screen-guilt quicksand, try this: Ditch the iPads for an hour. Chase them outside and get them a small swimming pool on the porch so they play outside in the sunshine, get them coloring books; bake cookies or muffins; get a sandbox and let them play with the sand; take them to the nearest park; or nearest convenient store for a treat. We’re not here to be tech’s sidekick—we’re moms, and we’ve got heart. Share your wins with #ScreenFreeMama—I’d love to hear how you’re fighting back.
